William Commins
William Commins [141] and wife, Mary Francis, were both born around the turn of the century in County Clare Ireland. Mary’s Australian obituary pays homage to her husband in Bellharbour, Clare, Ireland so it is presumed that she followed her children to Australia on the promise of a new life sometime after the death of her husband. Her obituary states ''that she leaves behind seven children and 42 grandchildren to mourn her loss''. Six of their children emigrated and settled in the Parish of Beneree, Bathurst County NSW, located seven miles south of Orange, and Springside, a postal village with the nearest railway station located almost five miles along the Orange & Molong line (37).
Children
Mary Commins [143 ] - was born in Bellharbour County Clare, Ireland. She immigrated to Australia with her family in 1866 (27). Mary was aged 70 when she died at her residence of ‘Belpage’, near Cadia in 1901.
Thomas Commins [170] - Thomas married Bridget Kennedy in Victoria, Australia 1860 and went on to have a large family of eleven children. Unfortunately he died at the age of 53 and the Springside property was left in the hands of his sons. Son, Thomas Jnr [174] is mentioned in historical records as ‘the Mayor of Springside’ (38). Son, Francis [183], became a Parkes solicitor who later fell in the Great War along with his brother, James [182]. Son, Patrick [178] became a Coonabarabran Solicitor and married the daughter of a Sydney doctor.
Catherine Commins [188] - Her obituary describes her as “coming from Ireland in 1856 and settling in Springside Orange with her husband, Martin O'Shannessy, who followed farming pursuits for a number of years. In 1904 her husband went to Wellington, where she resided ever since.” Catherine was married twice, both times in Orange, with a son to each marriage. Her eldest son, William [190], aged 49, predeceased her by a few weeks. Catherine was laid to rest in the Wellington Cemetery (40).
John Commins [194] - Farmed an area at Canobolas for some time, but in consequence of sickness in the family, several of the children died there, he removed into Orange, and then became proprietor of the Daniel O'Connell Hotel, Lords Place with his nephew Patrick Fahy [82] (25). Later he moved further along the street to the Rugby Hotel, which he relinquished, and then became one of the trusted maintenance men on the Government roads (41). John’s newspaper obituary says “at the age of 20 he came to Australia in a sailing ship, the voyage occupying six months. It was not long before he and his wife made their way to the Orange district. The coach from Penrith ran only twice a week, and as Mr. Commins and his brother Thomas were anxious to get to Orange as quickly as possible, they set out on foot, walking the long journey and arriving before the next mail coach (41).” John married Mary Kerins in Victoria, Australia in 1870 and settled on a property at Canobolas known as ‘Sands’. Mary was born in Ballyvaughann, Clare, Ireland in 1841. Unfortunately most of their children died on the farm from diphtheria and infantile troubles (42). John lost his wife, Mary [195] and his sister, Catherine [188], within a few days of each other in 1919, himself dying four months later at the age of 80 (9). John and his brother, Thomas, were both laid to rest in the Orange Cemetery.
Sarah Commins [205b] - Married John Martin in Orange 1893, John had emigrated from Galway, Ireland. In 1893 John was proprietor of the Rugby Hotel in Orange (58).
